Chairman Bourque called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. and the following business was conducted:
School Space Needs – Statement of Interest
Robert Hassett, Superintendent of Schools, provided information on the school space needs. Over the past several years they have seen a significant increase in enrollment. There are increases across all grade levels but the greatest and most immediate need is at the High School. The School system is a victim of its own success for the following reasons: (1) excellent SAT, AP and MCAS test scores, (2) 93% of students go on to college, (3) High School recognized state and nationally (designated a compass school and federal NCLB Blue Ribbon Award), (4) High School maintains full athletic programs including freshman sports, (5) maintains district-wide bussing program at no cost to parents, and (6) maintains extensive Community Schools program for enrichment/childcare/activities/ adult
education that continues during the summer months. Additional students are anticipated from the multiple new housing developments presently going on in Town.
The Massachusetts School Building Authority has changed their application process for building assistance. The new system evaluates statewide needs on an annual basis and the process begins with the submittal of a Statement of Interest.
On a motion of Selectman MacKendrick, duly seconded, the Board voted unanimously to approve the submission of a Statement of Interest to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for the purpose of having the school building needs evaluated.
The Board adjourned the meeting 10:10 a.m.
